The big push online is for small business owners to get with the program and start marketing their local businesses instead of using many of the old traditional marketing techniques.
1. Claim and Optimize Your Google Listing
Google was nice and “gave” local business owners all over the world free web pages to showcase their business information.
Google and Local Businesses, by the numbers:
- More than 4 million business listings on Google claimed by business owners (using the Local Business Center, now Google Places)
- Nearly 2 million listings have been claimed in the United States
- 20% of searches on Google are related to location
- There are 50 million Place Pages
- These cover all types of places, ranging from businesses like tailors, restaurants, and optometrists to locations like dog parks, transit stations, and baseball fields.
- Place Pages are viewed millions of times each day.
This was taken from Google Press Release and what does it mean to you as a local small business owner?
MORE POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS!
Claiming your local business page is not difficult. Optimizing does take more time.
2. How to Optimize Google Places Page
Add all information they are looking for.
NAP= Name, Address, Phone Number is a very important step when optimizing your page. Make sure this information is correct.
Categories – Google will let you have up to 5 different categories. Use these to your advantage and as close to what your business services/products that you have.
DO NOT use local words in the category area. If you are a plumber in Toledo Ohio, don’t put Toledo or any other cities you serve in the categories.
This is against the Google Places guidelines. Sooner or later you will get “Google Slapped” and could get your Google Places Page banned.
If you are looking at an SEO firm to take care of your marketing online, take a look at their places page and see if they added any location-based information. If they do have this in their Google Places Page, you may think twice about using them as this is not an ethical technique. If they are willing to do this for their own company, how are they going to be marketing your business online?
3. CATEGORIES
When choosing your categories, use Google keyword tool to see what people are really searching for when looking for your products/services.
Take time with this.
Look at what your competitors have for their categories (if they do).
4. COMPANY DESCRIPTION
Take time with this also. Look at your competitors. Do not keyword stuff but give people enough information about your company to make you stand apart from your competition.
5. COUPONS
Make a few coupons for prospective clients. In this economy, people are looking for deals. Give them something of value to get them into YOUR BUSINESS. Because once in, you can (hopefully) keep them as repeat customers.
6. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Add additional information, do you service or carry certain brands? Do you have off-street parking? Any additional phone numbers for your company? Think about when potential clients call your business, are they asking the same questions?
Use this space to your advantage.
7. PHOTOS
Google allows you to upload 10 pictures. Find pictures of your brands/products/services, a picture of your store front, the inside, people that work for you.
8. VIDEOS
You are allowed to have five videos. Make some presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint or make a video of services you do, or even the inside and out of your store and upload those to youtube and link them to your places page. The videos do not have to be long. You can make them 1 – 2 minutes long just to get your message out.
Are you a small business owner?
Have you taken advantage of this online advertising for your local business? If you haven’t, you need to.
I realize there are not enough hours in the day to get every thing done that needs to be done, so if you can’t, find a local search engine optimization firm that will help you with your business online marketing.
Not sure where to find one?
Check out Google Places.
Just type into Google Internet Marketing, Your city, state
and take a look at the maps tab and see which one you would like to work with.
Quit losing customers and let the internet become your 24/7 salesperson.

How can other people’s work make money for you? Affiliate Marketing.
Thousands of people look to the Internet for the best way to make money online. Maybe because they cannot stand their current position or just need a little extra help paying bills.
With so many ways to make money on the internet, finding something that works can be very frustrating.
The best way to make money online is affiliate marketing.
Why?
Because affiliate marketing is the best way to make money online where you can earn money with little to no start up cost.
You really don’t need a website or even extensive knowledge of the internet.
You don’t need to create your own product and best of all is you really don’t have to interact with others if you choose not to.
As an affiliate marketer you promote other peoples products online.
You just need to send your visitors, by-way of a link (your affiliate link) you get from a merchant to the product’s sales page. It may not even be a main page.
When a visitor whom you referred purchases the product the merchant pays you a commission.
Sound difficult? It is not, if done properly.
Finding Profitable Products
There are several resources for finding profitable products to promote.
1. Go to Clickbank.com and sign up for their affiliate program. Once you’ve created an account you now have access to more than 10,000 products you can earn commissions from.
There are many great paying products to choose from it’s no wonder this is the best way to make money online.
If you already have a website, search Clickbank’s marketplace for products that relate to your site theme. As it makes promoting so much easier.
You can contact the seller directly and see if they will let you sample the product.
2. As stated before, if you already have a website, do a search in Google search engine for affiliate programs that are within the main theme of your site. Example, if your main theme is healthy recipes just add affiliate after it. There are thousands of merchants that do not use vendors (like clickbank) to manage their affiliate program.
Promotional Marketing
There are many ways to send free traffic to your affiliate products. Another reason why this is the best way to make money online.
Article Marketing- Send traffic to your products sales page by writing articles on topics related to the product or actual reviews of the product itself. With hundreds of article directories all over the internet, you can find many to submit your articles for free.
Write articles that address a common problem that a potential customer might have. Then show them the solution by-way of your affiliate link to the product.
Try to keep the length of the articles between 500 and 700 words.
Too short and you won’t really grab their attention, too long and the reader will become bored. By writing 1 and 3 articles a day, you may start to see commissions regularly in about a months time.
Blogging- Blogging is similar to article marketing. You need to write about things that are interesting to you but make a little more personal.
Write from your own experience to develop a relationship with your reader. This makes them more inclined to visit your blog often and maybe even subscribe to it.
There are hundreds of free blog’s you can sign up for. Blogger.com is a good place to start. Just like article marketing you need to create as many blogs as you can and post them all over the internet. Of course, the more affiliate links you have the greater chances of earning commissions.
Squidoo.com – Start a lens related to the products you are promoting. Explain to your readers why the product solves their problem. You can create unlimited number of lenses and even link them together to help promote the products.
Affiliate marketing is definitely the best way to make money online if you are a beginner with little to no money to start up as these ideas here cost you nothing to apply online.
So why wait? Check out why it is really the best way to make money online.

How to Make Money as a Kid
The days of lemonade stands are long gone, but yet kids still need (and want) to make money. There is no better way to teach a
child the value of money, then to let them earn it.
There are kids making money on the Internet. But it does take creativity, determination and self-motivation to succeed to the
level that some of them have achieved.
Ways for a kid to make money online
Blogging – Many kids (and adults) love to play games online or on the computer. Runescape, World of Warcraft, or any of the free arcade game sites that are available.
With the help of a parent, a kid could make money by starting a blog about some of the favorite games that they play online. Why it is your favorite. If you are at a more advanced level with the game. Blog to help beginners with the game. What are the different secrets you have found to get into the next level. Where the secret “treasures” are at and how to get them. There are people everyday looking for tips, tricks and cheats for all the different video and online games.
There are many great online games, but may not be a big name like Runescape, but still just as fun. If you know some of the best places online to play games, you can blog about it and if the website has an affiliate program, join to make extra money. Google Adsense is
another way to make money from a blog.
eBay – Many kids buy video games, trading cards and such by using money they received from allowances, birthdays, and holidays. Once it is played for a while, you may lose interest in the game or have beat it. Since this was purchased by “their”
money, help them sell it on eBay or Craigslist.
Create a Website – This sounds like a huge undertaking for a kid. But when Nori Evoy was just 15 she started her own site about the love of a vacation spot the family went to. Just a couple of years later, the site is making her thousands of dollars a month. The product she used to start her website is called Site Build It. This link is geared towards college students, but with the help of a parent (their credit card) and your thoughts and ideas, you both may find a way to make money online.
Artistic Designs – If you have an artistic side, you can create your own designs and use Cafepress to help set you up a store (or let others sell your designs). Do you have sayings that could be put on a t-shirt, bumper sticker, coffee cup or hat? Even if you are not very artistic, take a look at all the different designs they have available. Just think how much the people that came out with the smilie face made with that design or the drawings of stick people with funny sayings on them.
Squidoo.com – Instead of a creating a website, you can create lenses on squidoo about things that you enjoy.
Find a Niche – That is what Ashley Qualls did. See part of her story here. She found her niche market for girls on MySpace/social networks. If you are not sure what a niche market is, here is
the definition from Wikipedia.
Final Note on kids making money
Some of these ideas may be easy ways for kids to make money. Use your imagination, creativity and don’t forget to talk with your parents before you start any of the above. Just because you are young does not mean that you can’t make money. Heck, you may even make enough that your parents will start asking to borrow from you.
The ideas I have above need the help and guidance of parents (or guardians) to help safeguard their safety on the Internet.
You hear more and more about how kids make money online. This may be far and few between, but if given the proper guidance, it
could happen to you.

eBay consignment – Another way to make money on the Internet
Many people may not know what a consignment store is. You give products (toys, clothes, maternity, baby items, fur and leather coats, etc.) to a person to resell, but you still remain the owner of that product until sold.
They are also called thrift stores or second hand shops. You may even have a couple of these stores local to you and shop at them yourself.
Consignment selling
There are many stores you can drop your items off and have them sell it for you. You then receive a percentage of items sold OR you can start your own consignment business.
eBay consignment business
Many people have tons of things they would like to get rid of but don’t have the time to sell it on ebay, so they make it easy and take it to a donation center. This is where you come in.. open your own ebay consignment store.
If you don’t have a lot of money to advertise, find different ways that are inexpensive. Word of mouth, tell your family and friends about it, put up notices in a local laundry mat, grocery store or local recreation center. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce to see if they have places you can post a notice for your new venture. You will take peoples items, sell it on ebay and give them a percentage of the money remaining after all the fees have been taken out.
I have seen ads in my local newspaper for people that are doing this as a home based business. They don’t have fancy store fronts, but they do need to have the storage space available.
You can also set a price amount for the items that you will accept (example: nothing under US$20 resell price). It may not pay for you to sell items that do not have a very high resell value on ebay, but it may help bring in more potential customers. If the products that people bring you do not have a high resell it may help to group some products together and sell as a “Lot”.
Don’t be surprised by the items you can sell on ebay on consignment. If you are thinking of just the normal products to sell, do some research on ebay’s marketplace and see many of the items that people are buying. Leather coats, fur coats, used video games, etc.. Think world wide for selling of your products and not just within the country you reside in.
Where do I find more information on selling on consignment?
If you would like to find out if this is a business from home that you can use to make money, there are books at Amazon and of course on ebay to look at. Another really good place to see if they have any updated books would be at your local library.
If you do your research on the internet for the books and software packages needed to start this business, make sure you check out the website because as I am sure you know there are many scams out there.

Thousands of people are searching for free web hosting every day.
There are many companies that do offer free hosting plans, but even though you may not be paying for it, the free web space will come as a cost.
Let me say there are certain times when you may want to use a free hosting provider.
- Keep in touch with family and friends for an up-and-coming special occasion
- Working on a school project
The above are not the only reasons why you may want to have a free host but if you building a website for profit or have a local small business and want to have a web presence, then you should not be using a free web host.
Why Not Use Free Hosting?
If you are looking to make money online with a web site, using a free hosting company does not look very professional. If you can’t take your business seriously, then I don’t believe your visitors will.
Many times when you have an account with a free hosting provider, you do not have your own domain name. Your URL may look something like this,
www.thebigfreesite.yoursite.com
You are actually a subdomain and that does not look very professional.
If you are using the free space because you have a local small business, using a sub-domain can be harmful to your business reputation.
Most business owners will use their small business name as their domain name to make it easier for people to find them on the Internet.
If you can’t afford to spend $5.00 a month to be seen online, then you need to review your budget for advertising as that is why many of the local small business are getting online. It is very cheap advertising. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to be put into a telephone book that many people don’t use anymore.
Hosting Space
The hosting space since it is free is very limited. Because of limited space, you may not have room for all the web pages you plan on creating.
This could create problems for you in the long run.
You can actually purchase a hosting account with unlimited bandwidth and diskspace for under $5.00 a month at Hostgator.
As you can see the cost of web hosting is very affordable.
Many hosting companies even have a free domain name for life when you purchase your hosting through them.
Ads on Hosting
To generate money, most of the free hosting services will put ads on your site. You, unfortunately, will not reap any of the profit.
Once your site is online, you will not be able to put any ads on it, as most of the providers do not want you taking away from their profits.
So maybe free web hosting is just what you need, but before you start creating a website with a provider, make sure you answer this question honestly.
If my free hosted web site disappeared tomorrow, would it really matter?
You need to answer that question honestly, as I have known people that have devoted a lot of time and created large sites using free hosting space, only to find one day it was gone.
They not only lost income from it, but all the time spent designing and building the site just how they wanted.
They had to start over.

Keyword optimization, the art of choosing correct keywords for your pages, is one of the most important things related to search engine optimization.
Unfortunately, most people spend very little time on it. They decide on a few keywords quickly, optimize their pages for it, then publish to the Internet.
Most times then not, this results in very poor rankings in the search engine results page. That is if they are found at all.
Before optimizing your web pages for the search engines, you need to spend time figuring out exactly what keywords, or keyphrases, you want to target.
Yes, engines are an excellent source of free traffic, but if you want to utilize them to their full potential, a little effort is required.
Ask Google
If you already have a website and not getting much traffic. One of the first places to start is to see how Google views your site.
One of easiest ways to find out what Google thinks your site is about is use the Google Keyword Tool and where it says “How would you like to generate keyword ideas?” Click on “Website Content”.
Enter your URL (just your homepage first) and see what information comes back. Then you can go back and check for the whole site.
Another way is to use Google Webmaster Tools.
Don’t have an account? Sign up free for Google webmaster tools.
Submit your site map and let Google “crawl” the site. This may take a couple of days, but it will be well worth it.
Once they crawl your site, you can see a lot of information in your webmaster tools account.
On the “Dashboard” page, you will see a section for Keywords.
It will show you the 5 top keywords of what the search engine “thinks” your site is about. Click on the more link and you will be able to see more keywords in order of significance.
If the top 5 keywords are not what your site is about, you need to start at your home page and begin your web site optimization.
Website Optimization
Read your home page. After reading, answer these questions.
- What is the main theme of the page and of your website?
- Which words describe the contents accurately?
- What words or phrases would someone use if using a search engine to find this information?
Once you answered these questions, write down the words and phrases.
Don’t worry if the list becomes very long, you can always remove some later.
When I started keyword optimization for my website (createawebsitetutorial.com), I selected one main theme. Then used popular keywords or phrases for each of the sub-pages that was pertaining to the main theme.
I decided on the popular keyword phrases two ways.
1. Thought about what information was need to help people with site creation.
2. Looked at my competitors websites.
Create an individual and distinct list of keywords for each web page. The other popular words would also be used in the navigational menu.
Each of the popular keywords for your different web pages should cover different areas.
It is okay to have similarities between your lists, but should not be 100% identical.
With your list handy, go back to the google keyword tool and type in the most broadest theme for your site.
See what phrases come up for the main theme.
Are any of the keywords that came up on your list?
If you have a blog attached to your site, you may want to use some of the keywords in blog posts or drop them entirely.
If other words look like they are searched for quite a lot, it may be a good idea to consider adding them.
But remember, you need to…
Keep the search engine optimization process in mind!
By now, your list is probably pretty full of very competitive, single-word terms such as “diet” or “health” or “money” or whatever. Take them off the list.
I don’t mean to sound sound harsh, but if you’re a beginner, you will have no chance of achieving page one or two under such terms.
There are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of sites targeting them and even with excellent search engine optimization skills, are extremely tough to conquer.
Think about different variations of these popular keywords. If you were originally thinking about the keyword “diet”, look at using a long tail, about 4 – 5 keywords, like “quick weight loss tips”.
These terms may possible be easier to rank well under.
It is better to be in the top 10 for a search term with medium searches than to rank on the 15 – 20th page for a heavily searched term.
Select keyphrases that get searched, but that aren’t too competitive.
You can check to see if a keyword phrase is highly competitive by using Google search engine and type in the phrase with ” around the term. example “quick weight loss tips”. This will show you how many web pages are optimized for that phrase.
If it is only a couple hundred thousand, you may have a good chance at achieving top ranking.
Many webmaster also target common misspellings, if some of the keywords related to your site are often spelled wrong.
Be very careful doing this, as it is hard to efficiently target misspellings without damaging your site’s authority.
Would you buy anything from a person that can’t even spell properly?
Didn’t think so.. So, be careful with those misspellings.
At this point, you should have completed your keyword optimization process and now possess a pretty good list of medium-popularity keyword phrases for each of your pages.
I recommend you read basic on-page search engine optimization. It shows where to place the keywords you selected in order to achieve results with the search engines.
Tags: SEO
The best time to do this basic search engine optimization is when first creating your page.
Most web design software programs have an area built-in to the program allowing you to optimize for page title, description and keywords.
If you are using software that does not allow you to place in the meta tag information, you should find another program that will let you optimize your pages.
This information is found in the <head> section of a website.
Page Title
Between the <title> </title> tags, name the page using your main keyword in a small sentence. Do not use “Untitled”, “Page1″ or any other non-descriptive term. It will do nothing to help your search engine rankings. Also this is what the search engine results show as title to your page.
Description
Next write a description using the description meta tag. Which looks like this, <meta name=”Description” content=”yourpagedescriptionhere”>.
This needs to be about 2 or sentence long and contain your keywords or phrase once or twice. The search engines only “see” the first 160 characters, so keep it short and simple.
This information is many times used when you see a description on the search engine results page. If a description is not here, many times the engines will take short blurbs from your page and use in the results page.
Keyword
The keyword meta tag looks like, <meta name=”Keywords” content=”this, contains, keywords”>.
Include each keyword / keyphrase only once. Do not repeat your keywords over and over in the keywords tag.
Even though many of the search engines are not using the meta keyword tag when “crawling” your site, it does not hurt to get into the habit of optimizing each of the pages with it.
Header Tags
The header tags are within the body of the page but your visitors will not see them, only the search engine spiders will.
The <h1> tag shows the “spiders” this information is important. Try to use your keywords in a sentence within the <h1> tag.
The header tags are from used h1 to h6. Since <h1> is the most important each of the tags following, <h2> is the second most important, etc…
Think of each header tag as a beginning of a new paragraph when you write your page content.
Page Content
You need to make your content a minimum of 400 – 500 words.
Use your main keywords about 2 – 3 times in the top third of the page, sprinkled in the body and once in the last paragraph.
If the page has 500 words, then only use each of your keywords 5 – 6 times.
Rule of Thumb – keyword density for your pages should be less than 2.5%. Any more and it may look as you are spamming.
Example – If the page has 500 words, then only use your keywords
Do not try to stuff them in, but write the information so it reads correctly.
Images on Page
If you are using images on your webpage, you need to give them an “alt” tag. This tag serves a couple different purposes.
It will let the search engine spiders understand what the image is about and if a visitors cannot “see” the image your “alt” tag will replace it.
Do not try to stuff your keywords into an alt tag, only use them if it is relevant. It needs to be descriptive of the image.
Optimizing your web pages may not help right way with your search engine rank but as time goes by you may see your page rise in the search engine ranks.
This basic on-page search engine optimization needs to be done on each of your pages.
